Marine Electronics : Find Your
Pot of Gold at the End of the Rainbow
Teresa sat rigidly—hands clutching her life vest—in her boyfriend,
Jordan’s, boat. She eyed her recent purchase from the marine electronicswebsite. They had a great selection of mounting navigation
systems for the boat. Teresa had bought the navigator as a Birthday giftfor Jordan—and also to give herself peace of mind at sea.
Teresa was very nervous about being on the water. She had no faith in Jordan’s
skills as a navigator and always imagined herself being swept up into a typhoon or lost in the Bermuda Triangle. The electronic aid she’d
purchased assuaged these fears a little.
“And that thing will really keep us from getting lost?” Teresa asked Jordan as
she pointed at the small, electronic gps unit. She didn’t even really understand what she was buying at the time of her online purchase. She
just knew that Jordan was into marine gadgets, and she thought an electronic navigator might help her have more fun on those weekends when she was
badgered into going out on the boat. After all, electronic navigation tools could be trusted to keep them away from the Bermuda Triangle,
right?
“Aw, Tess, relax,” Jordan tried to soothe her. “You picked an
excellent Birthday gift, babe.” He, in contrast to Teresa’s beliefs, was an experienced mariner, but he still thought the electronic gift
was cool. Teresa was right about him liking marine gadgets. “Not only will that little screen show us where we are and help us navigate, it
has color chart plotters and XM satellite weather. So, if we see that a storm is coming—which it’s not”—he paused here and grabbed Teresa’s
hand, “we can plot a new course to navigate away from it.”
“Well, all right,” Teresa said cautiously as she pulled her hand back from Jordan and gripped her life vest again.
She eyed the electronic gps unit suspiciously.
As time passed, Teresa slowly began to unwind, and she noticed that the boat had
drifted into a spectacular little cove. She could see the sun melting out of the sky behind high cliffs. Her mind finally wandered away from
electronicsand she started to embrace the marine experience.
“Wow,” she breathlessly murmured as she stood and took hold of the railing and
looked out into the great, wide forever of the painted sky.
Jordan, noticing the marked change in
her attitude, went to stand behind Teresa. He put his arms around her waist and gripped the railing on either side of her.
“See, boats aren’t all bad,” he whispered.
“This is unbelievable,” Teresa spoke softly. “Can that electronic thing help us
navigate our way back here next time we come out on the boat?”
“Next time?” Jordan was surprised to hear Teresa getting at all excited about a
boat trip. “Well, we can get anywhere easily thanks to you,” he gestured toward the navigator.
Teresa tilted her head upward and looked into Jordan’s eyes. “Okay,” and that
was all she needed to say.
