Andrew’s eyes had glazed over as he stared at his computer screen, which displayed a website that offered fishing equipment . He had retreated into his mind and was imagining himself fly fishing with his sons, Timothy and Matthew. Andrew was an experienced fisherman, and he’d been teaching his sons how to properly hold fishing rods and cast a fishing line.

He pictured a serene lake under calm skies and a peaceful breeze. He thought of bringing home that big fish for dinner and of the bonding he would share with his boys. Although neither of the boys was yet a master fisherman, they did love to fish with their father. Fishing gave them a chance to spend quality “guy time” with their dad.

When Andrew’s wife, Melanie, came into the den, she brought him back to reality by asking what he was looking for on the computer.

“I’m going to take Tim and Matt fishing next weekend, and we need some new rods and other equipment. And I was thinking about a fish finder, come look how neat this is.” Andrew showed Melanie the specs on a little piece of technological equipment that would tell him exactly where that big fish he’d imagined was.

“Fishing again?” Melanie asked good-naturedly. Melanie was not any kind of fisherman at all. She loved that her husband and sons could spend time together fishing, and she certainly enjoyed all the fresh fish for dinner; however, she wasn’t about to sign up for a fishing trip herself.

“And you’re going to buy the rods and other equipment over the computer?” Melanie inquired—she wasn’t very tech savvy. And she didn’t understand why anyone who already owned one rod would need another either, but she didn’t begrudge her husband the equipment he felt he needed to take the boys fishing.

“Sure! It’s completely safe,” Andrew explained, “not to mention hassle-free. I just click on the equipment I want, type in a credit card number, and the rods and other fishing supplies will show up at the door. I love it!”

Now that Andrew was refocused on his task, he placed his order: three new rods, some fishing lures and line and the fish finder. It took only a matter of moments to complete the order, and then Andrew was free to once again daydream about the wonderful and relaxing day he was going to have fishing with his sons.
